Chicago

Earlier this year, I received a proposition from Adam and Jason Koontz of Born Rival to join their company as an additional pair of hands for shooting and as an extra photographer. Born Rival, originating years ago when Adam and Jason, brothers fresh out of college, sought careers in production work such as videography and photography. The name Born Rival stemmed from their constant sibling rivalry. Over time, their aspirations evolved beyond mere commercial shots with a final product. They aimed to infuse more meaning into their work, creating a community where individuals could come together, showcasing the intricate process behind the final product, and championing creativity for the creator.

I couldn't resist the opportunity, and as time unfolded, I joined my first shoot. The focus of the project was on showcasing Gelatin Labs, a film lab situated in Maplewood, New Jersey, along with its rich history, and the workings behind the lab. My role was to assist with photography and provide an extra pair of hands. Following that, I received an invitation to accompany them on a trip to the Chicago area for a shoot at Saint Mary's of Indiana, a college in Indiana, not Chicago funny enough. Although the project wasn't film-centric and leaned more towards a set-based format, involving interviews and extensive B-roll coverage throughout the school, I played a supporting role. For me it offered an excellent chance to immerse myself in the set environment and observe the intricacies of behind-the-scenes operations.

The experience proved to be priceless, offering insight into the dynamic nature of shoots. Amidst the hustle, I seized the opportunity to document the surroundings on film. Capturing photos regularly is essential; it nurtures creativity and serves as a source of motivation to continue crafting the art you love. It's crucial, even during "work," to incorporate activities that reflect your true self, whether it's drawing, exercising, or engaging in photography. Keeping the mind active and creatively dividing time between "work" and personal pursuits is vital.

This moment was one of those instances for me — making the most of the chance to take photos while still being productive and learning. I shot on both 35mm and medium format 120mm film, using my Mamiya 645, Leica Minx, and Nikon F3, with a primary focus on the Mamiya and Leica. I aspire to revisit Chicago someday to capture more of the city's street photography vibe and landscapes that are there if you look close enough. The photo collection captures moments from diverse locations, ranging from Chicago to Saint Mary's and its surroundings. Enjoy the compilation.
